Lopen Sangay Sherpa
was born in 1984 in Nepal, the land of the Buddha, in Dolkha District, Jiri 2 Yalung, a beautiful Himalayan paradise. As a child he completed the basic modern Nepali education. At the age of fourteen, he joined His Holiness Penor Rinpoche’s Namdroling Junior High School in Bylakuppe, South India. In 2002 after completing high school, he enrolled in the prestigious Ngagyur Nyingma institute for higher Buddhist studies, where he studied Buddhist philosophy through sutra, tantra and their commentaries, as well as Tibetan poetry and Buddhist history. In 2011 upon completing his nine years course, he was given the title “Lopen” or master of Buddhist philosophy, and appointed as a teacher at Namdroling Junior High School. After finishing his studies at Namdroling, he returned to his Himalayan homeland in Nepal and began working for the community by teaching Buddist philosophy and practice. In 2014, he and a small group of few friends joined together and established the Nepal Palyul Buddhist Society to promote and preserve the Buddhadharma in Nepal. Lopen Sangay worked as a vice secretary of this organization. And since 2018, Lopen has been leading as the resident teacher of Palyul Choekhor Ling in Erie Pennsylvania center, taking full responsibility for this dharma center.
